Manufacturers across the country are rushing to prepare for RICE NESHAP, an incoming EPA emissions standards regulation aimed at reducing pollutants from several categories of new, existing and reconstructed stationary engines. All applicable diesel and non-diesel engines must be retrofitted with an emission control product to meet these new requirements by May 2013. Every diesel engine is affected by this rule in some way, forcing the industry to profile all engines to determine standard levels, install all required devices, and then monitor the refitted engines for temperature, pressure, RPM and more. During the monitoring phase of compliance, dataTaker dataloggers are ideal for temperature and pressure sensing, especially engine temperature during operation in diesel engines. For example, under RICE NESHAP, engines over 500 HP must now use a continuous parametric monitoring system (CPMS) to measure pressure drop across the catalyst. Catalyst inlet temperature must also be measured to ensure it stays within 450°-1350°F, and here the dataTaker DT80 is an ideal single solution to measure both the engine temperature and the pressure drop. The DT80 features 5 to 15 universal analog sensor channels, 12 digital channels, and a serial sensor channel. The logger can connect to most sensors to scale and log almost any physical value, and dataTaker loggers are famous around the world for their rugged construction lasting over years of constant operation.
Additionally, the dataTaker CANgate CAN to ASCII gateway filters and converts CAN (Controller Area Network) and GPS (Global Positioning System) data to serial ASCII data. It has been designed to capture the real-time data available on CAN and GPS networks (e.g. temperatures, RPM, brake/throttle settings, latitude, longitude, speed etc.) and pass that engine monitoring information on to either a dataTaker data logger or host computer system. Two CAN interface ports are included, which allow connection of two independent CAN networks. The CANgate’s versatile configuration options allow users to select the parameters of interest, apply statistical functions (average, minimum, maximum) and control the format in which data are returned. The CANgate also supports widely used protocols such as ISO-15765 and SAE-J1939, as well as raw CAN frames.
The DT80 can store up to 10 million data points in user-defined memory, and users can choose to archive data on alarm event, copy to USB memory and transfer via FTP. Advanced communications capabilities include RS232 with modem support, Ethernet, and USB memory stick ports so that users can choose how they want to connect to the data logger.
FREE graphical interface software is built-in with dataTaker data loggers—dEX is a user-friendly resource allowing users to quickly configure the logger and view real-time measurements, calculations, and diagnostic information. Users can also see their real-time data as mimics, trend charts or tables, and retrieve historical data for analysis. Users get a quick start on compliance since dEX has no applications to install, runs directly from a web browser, and can be accessed either locally or remotely anywhere that a TCP/IP connection is available.
